Yielding light from electricity requires light bulbs and are a necessity for lighting dark areas. There exists various types of light bulbs with the common ones being LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent (CFs) light bulbs.LED light bulbs use LED being solid-state lighting devices that are capable of fitting in standard screw-in connections. LEDs are basically light emitting diodes utilized in light bulbs to produce light. The diode is a semiconducting chip that is able to produce visible light once electric current pass through it. Compact fluorescent light bulbs utilize fluorescent light bulbs filled with an inert gas argon and a little amount of heavy metal mercury. When an electric current pass through it, the cathode heats up sending out electrons which hit the argon and mercury. The excited mercury produces ultraviolet light (UV) which is not visible. Visible light is the emitted when the UV light passes through phosphor that coats the fluorescent lamb. Mercury used in CFs makes them be considered less environmentally friendly since in case mercury spills due to breakage of the fluorescent lamp, it would be toxic to human health.
The energy efficiency of the LED and CFs light bulbs varies considerably with the LED light bulbs being more efficient. The LED light bulbs do not require time for warming up as they start instantly once electricity is switched on. LED light bulbs are made from plastics which makes them more durable than other types of light bulbs made from glass. Thy work quite well in cold weather. LED and CFs light bulbs have the same lighting conditions although the LEDs last longer as use less energy making them cost effective.
When purchasing an LED light bulb, lumen should be considered other than the wattage. Measuring the energy amount a light bulb draws is wattage units while measuring the brightness a light bulb produces is done by lumen units. CFs and LED light bulbs could have the same number of lumens but the wattage of CFs would be higher than that of LEDs. Choosing an LED light bulb to purchase requires one to decide the color needed from the wide array of color ranges and where the bulb is to be used, A bright yellow color for an LED light bulb is shown by a small number of kelvins which are the unit for measuring color temperature. An LED driver is key during purchase of LED light bulbs for converting the alternating current from the power supply to direct current used by the LED light bulbs.
Improved LED light bulbs have been developed with better efficiency, cost and output making them suitable for all environments. LED light bulbs should be checked for compatibility for use in fixtures during installation as heat build-up can cause light bulb failure or even fire.
